Southwire's 12 for Life - Better Lives Through Education & Employment - Motivating Students to Stay in School

Community Impact

The growing dropout problem isn’t just a matter of statistics. It’s a real issue that hits close to home, with negative consequences that can ripple throughout the entire community in devastating ways:

Dropouts Hurt the Community’s Earning Potential.

Studies show that high school dropouts earn up to 30 percent less than their peers who completed high school or earned GEDs.

Dropouts will earn $300,000 less than high school graduates over the course of their lifetimes and will cost communities $320 billion in lost lifetime earning potential.

Cutting the number of dropouts in half would generate $45 billion annually in new tax revenue.

Dropouts Drain the Community's Resources.

Unemployed high school dropouts can present social and economic challenges for community service agencies, the local government, local organizations and churches.

Rates of high-risk behaviors such as teen pregnancy, delinquency, substance abuse, welfare dependency and crime are significantly higher among dropouts.

Dropouts are disproportionately represented in the criminal justice system, including about 75% of state prison inmates.

Communities can turn this problem around through innovative partnerships between schools and businesses that use the 12 for Life model. Learn more about how you can get your community involved in decreasing the percentage of high school dropouts.
