Southwire's 12 for Life - Motivating Students to Stay in School

The Problem

According to the U.S. Department of Education, there are a number of reasons why students might drop out of high school. Some of those reasons include a sense that teachers and administrators do not care about them or an inability to feel comfortable in a large, depersonalized school setting.* That’s why the mentoring component of 12 for Life is a critical part of the solution.

Who We're Looking For

We actively seek Southwire employees who have the time and interest in helping students at a tipping point to graduate and become productive members of the community. To get started, a Southwire Coordinator will identify Southwire employees and match them with students one-to-one, based on gender—our mentors are only matched with students of the same sex—age and interests.

How it Works

Once selected, Southwire employees go through mentor training to understand best practices and guidelines. Once they have completed training, mentors regularly meet with students at the 12 for Life plant to support them, help them with school and home work, become advocates for them and guide them through issues like problem resolution, budgeting, social skills and goal setting.

If you are a Southwire employee and want more information on becoming a mentor for a 12 for Life student, call 770-832-4319.
